SYDNEY, July 8 (Reuters) – The introduction of a disciplinary reporting system rather than the issuance of red cards is gaining momentum with Super Rugby coaches Tony Brown and Daryl Gibson, agreeing that World Rugby studies the concept.

Brown's Sunwolves spent the entire second half of their matchup with the Gibson Waratahs in New South Wales with 14 men after Semisi Masirewa received a red card for a tackle over Bernard Foley in Sydney on Sunday.

The Sunwolves also spent the last 10 minutes with only 13 players after Fumiaki Tanaka received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Jake Gordon in the 77-25 loss that guaranteed the title of the Australian Waratah Conference .

"I do not think there's any intention in it – it was just a shame," said Sunwolves Brown's badistant coach to reporters of the Masirewa.

"I think it was (the coach of the All Blacks), Steve Hansen, who said that the players were simply matched as they do in the league and that they play

"Maybe a yellow card and then if it's a serious incident, he is suspended after the game.

"Then the match is not affected as much as tonight or in the All Blacks test against France."

France was reduced to 14 men at the start of its second test against the All Blacks in Wellington last month. Benjamin Fall received a red card following an aerial collision with Beauden Barrett, who landed heavily on his head.

The red card of Fall was later canceled by World Rugby, but the match itself ended as a fight as referee Angus Gardner declared at the back of Montpellier that he had no choice.

Hansen launched the idea after the match that World Rugby should consider setting up a reporting system like that of the rugby league.

The rugby league system involves the referee making a judgment that an incident might require further investigation by a disciplinary panel. The player involved is rarely sent to the field at that time.

The Waratahs coach, Gibson, said that he also thought that a reporting system could make sure that the game remains a fight. The Sunwolves had only trailed 24-18 when Masirewa was sent off.

"I certainly support this, the effect that this (the red card) has on the game, it takes away the contest," Gibson said.

"In this case, the referee has no option. He follows the letter of the law and that is what he has to do.

" Having a step Intermediate who's not quite a red card, give him some reasonable options. "(Report by Greg Stutchbury, edited by Amlan Chakraborty)
