South Africa will introduce new oil and gas laws after the elections next year, said Minister of Mineral Resources Gwede Mantashe.

"We will ensure that this is one of the first laws to be dealt with by the new parliament after the elections," he said in Cape Town on Thursday.

The process of approving exploration applications will be completed in accordance with the current Mineral and Petroleum Act.

The oil and gas sector must promote the economic empowerment of blacks, especially at the operational level, he said.
