Electronic cigarettes allow people to use nicotine without burning tobacco.
Avoiding the burning of tobacco is the most effective preventative measure of health, given the diseases that conventional cigarettes cause.
Unfortunately, our government and the media are now acting as if the health crisis is an e-cigarette affair.
"Your children are not an experience! Protect them from e-cigarettes, "warns Dr. Vivek Murthy, former general surgeon, in a PSA CDC.
My former employer, ABC News, who never finds a risk that he does not hide, has operated more than a dozen vaping stores. A "Nightline" reporter has warned about children "addicted to nicotine even before they graduate from college!"
Yet, compared to regular cigarettes, e-cigarettes are "extraordinarily less harmful," says Michelle Minton of the Competitive Enterprise Institute. In my most recent new video, she says, "We should really be encouraging people to use vaping. "
To say that vaping is safer than smoking does not mean that the risks are zero. Steam also contains harmful chemicals. But scientists say it's far less harmful than smoking. If smokers switched to e-cigarettes, it would save millions of lives.
Nicotine is what makes electronic cigarettes and regular cigarettes addictive. But nicotine is not so bad in itself. Like caffeine, it's a stimulant.
"On the spectrum of addictive drugs," says Minton, "nicotine and caffeine are very similar."
The big health risks come from the other 7,000 chemicals generated by burning tobacco leaves.
On the other hand, electronic cigarette smoke is mainly flavored vapor, which is less likely to harm anyone.
It does not even smell as bad as the cigarette. "Someone who sucks a huge cloud of Vanilla Cherry Blast, or anything else, is nicer than staying next to someone exhaling the smoke of a person." combustible cigarette, "observed Minton.
Full disclosure, think tank Minton received money from companies that manufacture electronic cigarettes. Nevertheless, she is right. Vaping is a much safer alternative.
"Although some lunatics say that e-cigarettes are more harmful – based on zero evidence – every legitimate scientist who investigated this issue said," We do not know all the risks, but we can say that ". they are less harmful than others. smoking & # 39;. "
Nevertheless, the American health police went to war against vaping.
Some cities want to ban vaping. The CDC funds advertisements saying: "Young people should never use this type of product!"
But the kids will do it. Children experience all kinds of things. Much better than they vape than smoke.
In fact, according to the CDC data, children have been out of breath since 2014, but recently there has been a spike.
"The only explanation I can find," said Minton, "is that the CDC and the FDA have announced these products by talking a lot about them!" The CDC says to kids that you should not do this will not necessarily tell many of them say no, maybe it does more attractive to them. "
Minton recognizes that it's bad if children become addicted to nicotine, but it's a risk worth taking.
"Do we want children to become dependent on something? No, but preventing a small percentage of teens from trying electronic cigarettes is not worth sacrificing adults whose lives could be saved. "
About half of teenagers who use cigarettes will never quit. About a third of these users will die from smoking-related diseases. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in America.
So banning alternatives is not a good measure for public health. Minton cites the example of snus, a popular tobacco chewing paste in Sweden. The snus is not totally harmless, so the rest of Europe has banned it. But "Sweden currently has the lowest rates of smoking and lung cancer in all EU countries".
To ban snus in Europe was a tragedy of public health. Now, the United States is doing something similar with electronic cigarettes.
Minton says that "in countries where the electronic cigarette is in effect (age limit), the rate of teen smoking increases because when the teenager wants to do something like smoking can not get to get an electronic cigarette, he just starts smoking. "
Thanks to the government's paranoid warnings and media hype, Americans who could rationally choose electronic cigarettes over burnt tobacco are now more likely to be killed by conventional cigarettes.
