Sony launches new game cartridge design

Why it's important: Production of the PlayStation Vita and its cartridges is expected to end next year, but Sony maintains that it is not ready to give up the game completely. With the discovery of a new patent for a game cartridge, we could get an idea of what it holds.

Reported for the first time by Techtastic, Sony's "electronic game cartridge" appeared on the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS) this month.

While the successor to PS Vita is perhaps the most obvious reason why Sony patented a cartridge design, the Nintendo switch, which has proved incredibly popular, could have a big influence here.

The connection at the bottom of the cartridge is similar to the one used to communicate with a console. A circular hole can also be used to remove or transport it.

Last May, John (Tsuyoshi) Kodera, from Sony's gaming division, said: "Rather than separating handheld games from consoles, it's necessary to keep thinking about [portable gaming] as a method to offer more gaming experiences ".

It is important to remember that many patents never become true products, but it is clear that Sony's cartridge is one of the company's most ambitious projects. It only remains to see if it is a PS Vita 2, a PlayStation 5 with some features like Switch, or something else.

We have also seen new PS5 rumors on the web. The leaked PS5 photos were released this week and the console would feature an 8-core Ryzen processor, a custom GPU based on AMD's upcoming Navi architecture, priced at $ 500. No mention of the use of cartridges, however.
