Concerns have arisen over the continuation of international cricket matches in the future at the Galle International Cricket Stadium where Sri Lanka has recorded the highest victories in the trials.

A special discussion was held at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs yesterday (July 18) with the participation of the Department of Archeology, Urban Development Authority, Sri Lanka Cricket and the Galle District Cricket Administration in charge, Western Province Cricket Association Secretary Anura Weerasinghe.

However, the Ministry of Southern Development says that no decision has yet been made to remove the Galle International Cricket Stadium.

The ministry added that the Galle Cricket Stadium is located near the Dutch Fort at Galle which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and that it was built without the Approval of a responsible authority.

Meanwhile, Sports Ministry Secretary Kamal Padmasiri noted that the final decision on the Galle Cricket stadium should be made by the cabinet.

The original proposal for the withdrawal of the stadium is to be presented in December of next year.

In addition, a detailed discussion took place yesterday on the area in which the replacement stadium should be constructed if the Galle International Cricket Stadium were to be removed.

The Galle Cricket Stadium, which received international status in 1998, has since hosted 31 test matches and 6 international matches.

Of the 31 games played, Sri Lanka had won in 18 tries, while 6 games ended in a draw.
