On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 Moon Landing, the South Carolina State Museum has created a new exhibit retracing the history of NASA's Apollo program and South Carolina's role in the exploration of the Moon . The exhibition is called Apollo 50: Journey to the Moon.
"A lot of things go into making an exhibition. From a content point of view, the appropriate historical context must be found. In this case, the historical context of the Apollo program was defined in the 60s, the late 50s and a bit in the early 70s, "says Brian Jirout, curator at South Carolina State Museum.
The immersive exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the years of the Apollo program as America ran to achieve a lunar landing before the Soviet Union. Museum enthusiasts will be able to learn about astronauts from the South Carolinians who have contributed to the Apollo program. Some features of the exhibit are a replica of the Apollo Lunar Rover in which guests can sit, a collection of objects from Charles Duke's Apollo 16 mission and "lunar" training rocks.
"I hope the guests will realize how much these guys had to be nervous to go into space. I mean, our smartphones have more computing power than this whole rocket … and just their dedication, "said Huck Behrends, director of exhibitions and facilities.
Learn about the space age in Chasing the Moon. The series will debut July 8, 2019 on SCETV. Robert Stone's "Chasing the Moon" reinvents the race for the moon for a new generation, disrupting much of the conventional mythology surrounding this effort.
South Carolina ETV will host several community events in the state. For more information, check out our calendar of events.
