Openbank, an exclusively digital subsidiary of Banco Santander, has migrated to the cloud, integrating all Amazon with its Web services.
Launched in 1995 as a telephone banking antenna, Openbank was relaunched last year as a purely digital transaction, transferring all IT badets and customer transactions to the cloud.
The unit, which has 1.3 million customers in Spain, is now running production workloads on AWS, including its website, mobile application and main banking system.
One of the main reasons for the cloud migration is Santander's project to extend Openbank internationally, using AWS global infrastructure to increase redundancy and fault tolerance by replicating key systems in different regions geographical.
Cristóbal Miralles, Head of Technology and Operations at Openbank, said: "AWS has enabled us to launch a secure and reliable digital bank in a multinational environment that complies with European regulations in record time.
"We use the most comprehensive set of cloud services to evolve our customer service models and help us meet the rigorous requirements of stakeholders and regulators who need transparency and evidence of architectures robust security solutions that protect both our customers and their proprietary data. "
The bank is also preparing to use AWS machine learning technologies, such as Amazon SageMaker, to automate financial transaction tasks and use more badytics to better understand what customers want.
This week, AWS also revealed that it has signed the Ellie Mae and Guardian Life Insurance contracts. Guardian's Dean Del Vecchio says, "AWS has helped Guardian overcome the disruptions in the insurance industry caused by new technologies and changing customer expectations."
