While Texas did not set an energy record on Friday, we did it Wednesday and Thursday. On Thursday, ERCOT set a new peak demand demand for the entire system, two hours in a row, reaching 73,250 MW between 4am and 5am.
ERCOT says it's expecting the state to hit new demand records as this heat wave continues.
Austin Energy says he's closely monitoring the state's network and demand on his system this week.
"As a member of the Austin City team, Austin Energy will do everything in its power to maintain power during this extreme event," said General Manager of Austin Energy, Jackie Sargent. "Our equipment and staff are well prepared."
During peak usage hours, Austin Energy may activate energy saving measures for customers who have accepted these arrangements.
To save energy and money, here are some helpful tips During this heat wave:
- Set your thermostat to 78 degrees or more in the summer. AE suggests that if you are away for two hours or more, you should set the thermostat to 85 degrees
- Use fans!
- Close blinds / curtains on windows hit by direct sunlight.
- Avoid lighting the oven during the hottest time of the day. Using a microwave or slow cooker produces less heat.
