TEHRAN – Iranian international referee Alireza Faghani defended Video Assistant Referee (VAR), claiming that video critics prevented major mistakes

Faghani and his compatriots Reza Sokhandan and Mohammad Mansouri took over head of the 2018 World Cup Draw between Belgium and England

The Iranian referee has not used the VAR in four matches that he has refereed in Russia, but he says it helps to prevent mistakes.

"VAR minimizes arbitration errors during competitions.VAR is not complete but it will probably have to improve in the future," Faghani said in an interview on Iranian public television

"In 2009, French striker Thierry Henry deliberately handled the ball to score William Gallas' decisive goal against the Republic of Ireland in the World Cup barrier in Paris. France went through an error of arbitration and Ireland was eliminated with a feeling of injustice, "he declared

" In match of Iran and Portugal , the referee (Enrique Caceres) has inflicted a penalty on Cristiano Ronaldo. And Iran has also obtained a penalty in additional time.It may also mention the goal of Saeid Ezatolahi against Spain who was denied for offside, "continued the Iranian referee.

"I remember a match between Persepolis and Zob Ahan at Tehran's Azadi Stadium." I gave Zob Ahan a penalty after I thought Persepolis defender Mohsen Bengar hit the ball but that the replays showed that it was a decision mistake Persepolis fans still criticize me after years for this decision, so I think VAR is helping football, "Faghani concluded.

According to reports, a total of 455 incidents were verified during the 64 matches played at the World Cup, for an average of 7 checks per game.
