Anglo American wants to make a positive contribution to South Africa's efforts to reform land tenure and address racial inequality, said Director-General Mark Cutifani.
Anglo will make an announcement on this subject in December, he told the press Wednesday in Johannesburg. South Africa, where Anglo was founded more than a century ago, must find an inclusive and sustainable solution to agrarian reform, Cutifani said. The desire to stimulate investment from the continent's most industrialized economy could be strengthened "if the government clearly states what land excellence looks like," he added.
"What does the final game look like in terms of diversifying land ownership and ensuring the productivity of the land?" Said Cutifani. "Answering this question will help investors understand how their investments could be affected and how they can help South Africa achieve the desired result."
South Africa seeks to reverse the legacy of apartheid and colonial rule, which makes whites own nearly three-quarters of agricultural land although they represent less than 8 % Population. Earlier this month, a group of South African lawmakers decided that the constitution needed to be amended to facilitate seizure of land without paying the price.
Land restitution should be seen in terms of improving people's lives and "the need to promote greater investment for economic growth," said Cutifani.
