Jan Koum, co-founder of WhatsApp, is paying $ 87 million for a mansion in Malibu, Calif., Right next to the one he already owns, according to two people familiar with the deal.

The deal is the latest high-priced deal for Mr. Koum in the Los Angeles area. In 2019, he bought the neighboring Malibu property from entertainment director Ron Meyer for $ 100 million. Then last year, Mr Koum spent $ 125 million on the Beverly Hills estate of Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg.

The seller of the latest transaction is Diana Jenkins, an entrepreneur and philanthropist born in Bosnia. Ms Jenkins, founder of health drink company Neuro Drinks, was previously married to UK financier Roger Jenkins. His house hit the market last May for $ 125 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. It sits on Paradise Cove in Malibu, and its former owners include Barry Diller and the late country singer Kenny Rogers.

Sitting on top of a cliff, the property has its own funicular to the ocean (Mr Rogers was fined $ 2 million by local authorities for his installation). On nearly 3 acres, it features a five-bedroom one-story home with vaulted ceilings, herringbone floors, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open to the gardens. It also has a dance studio and a recording studio. On the grounds there is a three bedroom guest house, a swimming pool, a waterfall and a koi pond, a sports field and a caretaker’s house.

The funicular leads to a beachfront cabin, which has retractable ceilings, a wet bar, built-in barbecue and fire pit.
