MARION, N.C. (WLOS) – A longtime Walmart keeper will stay in his store after all in a new position. Jay Melton, who suffers from cerebral palsy, has accepted a guest position in the Marion Walmart store self-service area.
The decision was made after a negative public reaction after Jay learned that Greeter's posts were being eliminated in the country's stores.
"I'm overwhelmed – I mean, I knew I was loved, but I did not know that I was loved too," Jay told News 13.
Indignant customers launched an online petition to save his job, which attracted more than 18,500 fans.
The company said it was taking steps to support people with disabilities. This includes offering new jobs impacted in their respective stores.
While some people have hearts on their sleeves, Greeter Jay Melton has been wearing his jacket for almost 17 years.
"Proud partner of Walmart," he says as he reads the text of the vest that he wears at work. "I thank God every day for finding a job at Walmart."
Jay is suffering from a neurological disorder, but what really defines him is a bigger smile than any other retail giant.
"I mean I have a good personality and other things," he says.
"When Jay meets you, he will remember you," said his father, Jim. "But he just touches people's hearts, he always smiles, he always talks to their children."
Jay needs a little training, but he should be at his new position by the end of April. He jokes about why he willingly seized this new opportunity.
"I do not want to stay at home all day with him," he laughs, looking at his father.
"Thanks Jay," his father replied.
Jim is proud of the impact of his son at the store.
"He's just a human person and Walmart has been good for Jay, but Jay has been good for Walmart," he says.
Before his son took up the new position, Jim had received a call from Lowe's director who had seen Jay's story on News 13.
"And he said it pulled his rope," Jim said, tearing. "I am touched."
Jay and Lowe both offered a job at Jay, but his first choice was always Walmart.
Years ago, the chain had this watchman in hello. It looks like yesterday he had a seasonal job at Santa's store and he never looked back.
"It's a nice man obviously," said Jay about St. Nick.
Over the years, Jay has rubbed shoulders with politicians such as George W. Bush and Mitt Romney, but he has a lot more joy seeing his friends at Walmart.
"I can see people I've graduated with and meet people," he says.
I think it's wonderful, "said his father. Since he's gone to work at Walmart, he has enjoyed it every day. "
