After a mixed first year, the casino celebrates its birthday

BOSTON (AP) – The first casino in the style of Las Vegas, Massachusetts is getting organized for its anniversary with Aerosmith, New England Patriots cheerleaders and a five-tier cake.

But a year after it opened, MGM Springfield has underperformed and cut hundreds of jobs. Some business owners also said that the renewal promised downtown did not materialize.

Casino president Michael Mathis has promised that the resort is reorganizing for its second year. Before Saturday's festivities, he said the center was planning to focus on gambling-free entertainment, reorganize its slot machine offerings, and put pressure on legalized games of chance in Massachusetts.

But Colin Mansfield, a casino expert at Fitch, is not convinced that the adjustments will change the game.

The nearly $ 1 billion entertainment complex, which was to revitalize the struggling Springfield area, is facing a new rival to Encore Boston Harbor and potential new competition in Connecticut.
