There is a long and strange story at Sunday evening football theme, but the loop is complete this year. When NBC won the Sunday night rights in 2006, they incorporated the song "Waiting All Day Day for Sunday Night," based on "I Hate Me to Love You" by Joan Jett; versions of this song were used from 2006 to 2015, by Pink (2006), Faith Hill (2007-2012) and Carrie Underwood (2013-15). In 2016, they turned to a new song by Underwood entitled "Oh, Sunday Night" (from Underwood's "Something Bad" duet with Miranda Lambert in 2014). Last year, Underwood, Chris DeStefano & Brett James wrote a new Game On, song used for the 2018 broadcasts.
Heidi Merrill, who said he created "Game On" in 2016 and uploaded it to YouTube in March 2017, however, announced last June that she was pursuing the case in court. She claims to have presented it to the producer of Underwood Mark Bright in August 2017. refused. She then saw Underwood release the "substantially – even surprisingly – similar, if not identical" version of "Game On" used last fall. This lawsuit involves nine defendants, including Underwood, Bright, the NFL, NBC and the music publishing subsidiaries of Sony and Warner. And now, NBC returns to the first song and has Jett come for an appearance in the intro:
You know.
You like this.

Here's more of the NBC version:
NBC … will unveil a brand new open show with Carrie Underwood this season, with a nod to the inaugural NBC SNF opened in 2006 with a new interpretation of the original 'Waiting All Day for Sunday Night' music.
… On the invitation of Underwood, Jett – whose Top 10 hit of 1988, "I hate myself to love you", was adapted for the original show "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night", show opened in 2006 – appears for the first time at the NBC Open Sunday Night Football Show. Underwood will also be joined by the NFL stars (to be announced Monday) in the new open show.
"I've always been a big fan of Joan's and I'm thrilled she's joining us for the opening of Sunday Night Football," Underwood said. "What better way to pay tribute to SNF's original opening song than to be able to play with it on the biggest primetime scene?"
"When Carrie came up with this idea, we immediately saw it as a great way to change performance, while celebrating the song we used in our first 10 seasons of SNF," said producer Fred Gaudelli. NBC Sunday Night Football Executive. "We were delighted when Joan agreed to join us and we are looking forward to launching the finished product."
We do not know exactly what this new phone will look like, but for those who are interested, here is a video with all the different themes of Sunday Night Football 2006-2017. That of 2013 (the first time Underwood plays it) arrives around 9:55 am:
It's interesting to see NBC come back to the original music, which has lasted much longer (even in one version or another) than the two Underwood songs it has been trying ever since. He had his criticisms (including Mike Francesa), but at least that did not result in any lawsuits. And it's remarkable to see Jett actually appearing on camera this time around. We will see how she plays a role and we will see how this old theme will be received.
