They tried to warn us, but after only two days of the planned closure of runway 28L, scheduled for 20 days, SFO recorded an impressive number of cancellations and delayed flights – the delays appearing to be much longer than originally planned .

On Saturday, the first official day of construction, SFO announced nearly 350 impacted flights – 103 canceled and 244 delayed – according to ABC 7. On Sunday, this was followed by 114 delays and 34 more cancellations, according to the Chronicle, relatively better numbers but who are still not fantastic. SkyWest Airlines has canceled 89 regional flights in total.

And the delays did not all correspond to the 30 to 45 minutes that the airport had previously hinted: a passenger showed ABC 7 an updated route showing a short flight from LAX delayed five hours and twenty minutes. Other passengers spoke to the Chronicle three hours later than the airlines had not warned them. "They knew it was going to be bad, but they did not tell us," said a female passenger stuck in North Carolina while she was returning home to SF. "There has been no warning, it is just not correct."

On the first day of construction week, the airport had already reported 80 cancellations and 96 delays at 6:30 as reported by ABC 7.

The construction took place at a key intersection of airport runways, which has an impact on the arrival and departure flights. As KRON 4 notes, construction is expected to last until September 27th.
