Chicago’s Best Cop Begs City Criminals To ‘Stay Away From Children’ After Violent Weekend Injured Many Children, Including 4-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot lost while having his hair cut inside his house.
Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown delivered his passionate plea to the public on Monday morning as the prolonged violent weekend draws to a close. At least eight of the dozens of shooting victims reported so far were under the age of 18 – aged 4, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15, 16 and 17, the Chicago Police Department has published until here. At least 53 people were shot dead on Sunday evening.
“It’s about the safety of our babies,” Brown said at Monday’s press conference.
The youngest victim, identified by FOX 32 as Mychal Moultry, had his hair cut at an apartment in the Woodlawn neighborhood just before 9 p.m. local time when he was hit by two bullets fired from a window, said police and officials. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head and was rushed to an area hospital, but could not be rescued.
“You are hurting this community. You are hurting these families.”
Mychal was the second innocent passer-by, 4, injured in Chicago last week, police said. On Tuesday, September 1, a girl was shot when she was caught in the crossfire of a shootout between shooters in two vehicles in Englewood, police said. His injuries were considered not to be life threatening.
Police are looking for witnesses or information related to the senseless shooting.

Brown described how there were generally three circumstances in which children were injured or injured by gunfire, for example when they were hit by a bullet aimed at another target; when they are mistaken for someone else; or when “the targeted person visits a relative on vacation or attends a family reunion, and is targeted and family members are shot dead like innocent bystanders.”
Speaking from a personal perspective, “too many” of the offenders and victims are people of color, said Brown, who is black.

“And I have family members that I don’t invite to family gatherings just because of some of the issues with this family member living a life of crime,” he continued. “I would just… encourage you as a family to protect your children from family members who are on the wrong side of the law.”
And speaking directly to the criminals, he asked: “Why do you continue to hang out with young people, our children?

“It’s up to you,” he added.
He urged these offenders to “stay away from children if you want to live this life”.
“You are hurting this community. You are hurting these families,” he added. “And we will be relentless in prosecuting you as a delinquent.”
