A man was rescued but seriously injured after falling in the Kīlauea caldera in Hawaii this week, officials at the National Park Service said.

The incident occurred Wednesday in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, when a visitor passed over a metal railing, lost footing and fell off a cliff of more than 300 feet.

The man was trying to get closer to the edge of the cliff at Steaming Bluff, said the park service.

Another visitor called the emergency officers and a search and rescue team began looking for the man.

About two and a half hours after the announcement of the fall, a research team discovered that the "man" was alive but seriously injured on a narrow ledge about 20 meters from the edge of the cliff ", announced the park service in a statement.

The man was raised on the sill and flown to a hospital on the island, according to park services.

The last fatal fall in the park took place in October 2017 and park officials warned against crossing balustrades near the cliffs.

"Visitors should never cross the safety gates, especially near the dangerous and destabilized edges of the cliffs," said chief of foresters John Broward in a statement. "Breaking through the barriers and entering closed areas can result in serious injury or death."

Hawaii News Now reported that it was about a soldier from the Schofield Barracks in Oahu who was on the Big Island for training.

"He is obviously doing remarkably well for his downfall," Matthias Kusch, chief of the county fire brigade of Hawaii, told the press. "Only time will tell what wounds he has suffered."

The fall occurred about a year after the Kīlauea eruption in what would become the largest and most destructive eruption in Hawaii in decades.
