After cracking the pilot, Danny Willett fights again at the Masters 2020 with 3 woods

AUGUSTA, GA – Augusta National is playing even longer and softer for a guy like Danny Willett.

But it is his choice. He attacks it with only a 3 wood.

After cracking his driver’s head in the first round, the 2016 Masters champion Willett rolled with just his 3 woods for the second round – and isn’t sure if he’ll even put the big stick back in the bag for the weekend.

“We’re going to take a little look, but I’m pretty happy that if it’s not something that really stands out, we’ll end up playing like we did today,” said Willett, who fired a second. -round 66 and is 7 under 137, two hits from the head. “It’s one of those things where if you feel more comfortable with the 3 woods that we’ve had for a long time now, and put a better swing on it if you’re not sure of a rider, that may not be worth it. So we’ll just have to wait and see.

Willett cracked his driver’s face on the 17th hole on Friday morning. Although he has a spare head, he didn’t like what he saw on the beach and decided to do without it.

On the two holes that were used to calculate the distance traveled, Willett hit his 3 wood again averaging 279 yards on Friday. For the week, he’s ranked 60th in the field (of 91), at 283.9 yards per pop.

Even with a full compliment of clubs, this is a course Willett tends to attack primarily with 3 woods. “This place, for me, has always been a second-round golf course,” he says. With the receptivity of some of the greens, he’s still able to hold, say, a 6 iron into the green, despite losing 30 yards at range.

“In the past that would have been a real disadvantage,” he said.

Has he ever broken a driver during the competition?

“A few times, unfortunately,” he said, “and I didn’t even hit that hard. It’s just that I don’t like tinkering. This pilot is probably three years old, so the only problem with not liking to change all the time is that sooner or later something like that could happen.

As in the middle of the Masters.
