OWINGS MILLS, Md. – A day after quarterback Lamar Jackson said defenses called the Baltimore Ravens games, offensive coordinator Greg Roman attributed it to the regular chess game that takes place during games.
“Calling games on defense is nothing new,” Roman said Thursday. “They’ll be right sometimes [and] sometimes they will be wrong. I think we know that. But it’s definitely a part of the game. It always has been and probably always will be. “
The Ravens’ offense is in the midst of a significant drop from last season, dropping from second place in yards per game in 2019 to 23rd place midway through the 2020 season. Jackson told Wednesday. “The Rich Eisen Show” that Baltimore is too predictable on offense, saying, “They call our plays, stuff like that. They know what we’re doing.”
Asked about the comments of the reigning NFL MVP, Roman gave a two-minute response that began with how Jackson is a great contender who wants to win every game and every game.
“It definitely gives me information on when people call something and everything,” Roman said. “It’s definitely part of what we’re talking about.”
Is Jackson allowed to hear when he hears defenders calling for plays?
“There are definitely rooms where these audibles are available and integrated,” Roman said. “Some quarterbacks audible or have the freedom to hear every piece. Sometimes it works well for them, sometimes it doesn’t. Some people don’t at all. I would say we’re somewhere in between.”
Not all of the Ravens’ fights can be blamed on the call of play. Injuries have hit the offensive line, where two starters, left tackle Ronnie Stanley and right guard Tire Phillips, are on the injured reserve. It comes after Pro Bowl right guard Field Marshal Yanda retired during the offseason. Additionally, Jackson has been more inaccurate this season (26th in completion percentage) and the Baltimore wide receivers have almost as many falls in eight games this year (nine) as they did last season (10).
Still, there has been growing frustration within Baltimore’s offense this season. After the Ravens’ 28-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 1, wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown said in a deleted tweet since he didn’t get used enough in the passing game. Now Jackson has made it public that Baltimore is too deliberate on the offensive.
“We are very aware of our trends,” said Roman. “We are aware that there are now, and this is where it gets interesting. When you are good at something and can keep pressing that button, then you have the option of returning the script to at some point. “
