After training for the second day in a row, starting week 1 looks very possible for Wentz

For the first time in more than three weeks, Colts quarterback Carson Wentz trained for two consecutive days. And, just like in practice on Monday, he looked excellent again.

Additionally, Ryan Kelly and Quenton Nelson also returned in Monday practice. Nelson and Kelly are a vital part of the team’s offense, so bringing them back on the field is going to help a Colts offensive line that had suffered a bit in the early preseason games.

Wentz and Nelson’s timeline for a potential return was between 5 and 12 weeks after surgery, but they each participated heavily in back-to-back practices, which is a great indicator of their likely health.

“It was a lot of fun,” Wentz said after practice on Monday. “It was good to be back there with the guys.”

Even though Wentz returned earlier than expected, he acknowledged that he still had a few steps to go before he could fully participate in training.

“There are still things we need to work on, which is part of the plan,” Wentz said. “You might not see me here every day, there might be rest here and there.”

Despite being limited in practice, all three starters looked excellent in their returns. Wentz added a fluidity to the Colts’ offense that they haven’t had since getting injured.

In Tuesday’s practice he appeared to be even more comfortable, as Wentz connected with TY Hilton, who beat Xavier Rhodes, for a 65-yard touchdown early in practice. He struggled slightly after making a bad decision and throwing an interception at sophomore cornerback Isaiah Rodgers, which turned Wentz’s mistake into a pick-6.

The rust is no surprise for a quarterback who hasn’t hit the training ground for three weeks, but the Colts are confident they have plenty of time to get Wentz back on track before the start of the regular season.

As Wentz continues to aim for a potential Week 1 comeback, it’s important to remember that the Colts are going to continue to slowly loosen their quarterback in the starting attack.

“I’m optimistic, but we’ll see,” Wentz said when asked about his confidence level to be ready for week 1. “It’s not entirely my choice. It will depend on doctors, surgeons and physicians. coaches and how we feel, and a lot will depend on how I react and how it feels to be here day in and day out.

Playing week 1 is a very legitimate possibility for Wentz, and practicing back-to-back days is undoubtedly a gigantic step towards preparation for September 12th.
