Afterlife ‘is scary but nostalgic

It’s been 37 years since the original was released, but the Ghostbusters are still the ones you’ll call them.

A new trailer for the highly anticipated “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” came out on Tuesday, and fans are absolutely thrilled – and scared.

Directed and co-written by Jason Reitman, the latest installment in the franchise stars Carrie Coon as Callie and Mckenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard as her children, Phoebe and Trevor.

Fans even got a nostalgic glimpse of some of the original actors in their iconic roles from the 1984 blockbuster and the 1989 sequel. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Annie Potts reprise their roles from the original films with Paul. Rudd, who plays a summer school teacher.

After being evicted, Callie, a single mother, and her two children move to a decaying farm in Summerville, Oklahoma left to them by the children’s late grandfather.

The trailer opens with Callie noting that “I’m fine with Trevor, but with Phoebe she really keeps me on the outside.” Phoebe is called a “goofy, nerdy kid” and Trevor later notes that “we’re completely broke and our grandpa left us that creepy old farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.”

But all of a sudden, a series of unexplained earthquakes is wreaking havoc, even though the house isn’t located on any fault. At the same time, strange things start to happen in an old mine previously owned by alleged occultist Ivo Shandor.

While the original Ghostbusters had been largely forgotten at the time, the kids stumble upon the gang – via YouTube videos – who could perhaps help them save them from weird supernatural phenomena.

In later scenes, Trevor and Phoebe also learn about the Ectomobile, with Phoebe digging into her grandfather’s past. “Maybe it’s the apocalypse,” Phoebe speculates.

After a rather spooky scene in which Marshmallow Men wreak havoc in a supermarket, Phoebe warns that “something is happening” as supernatural manifestations begin to swirl around the city. Phoebe then harnesses the power of a proton pack as she shoots a ghost chasing the Ectomobile.

The very end of the trailer teases the return of Dan Aykroyd, whose character Ray Stantz answers the phone, “We’re closed.”

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” has been pushed back from a 2020 release date due to the pandemic. It will now be released on November 11 from Sony Pictures.
