Incredible success for the annual speedrunning event
Another Awesome Games Done Quick event has come to an end. Last week some of the best – or at least the fastest – video game players in the world gathered to fight their way through a cavalcade of titles old and new, all in the name of charity.
As the curtain fell in the last race, (which saw the CLG ZFG rider The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in just under 42 minutes), the grand total raised was $ 2,758,847. All of these proceeds will go directly to the Prevent Cancer Foundation, an international organization that works tirelessly to find vital developments in cancer healing.
AGDQ 2021 was the first AGDQ event to be held in a strictly online capacity, necessitated by restrictions from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this major hurdle, the GDQ team, the global speedrunner community, and a global audience on Twitch have come together to celebrate the video game medium, with seven consecutive days of exciting and sometimes mind-boggling challenges.
Newer titles such as Hades, River City Girls, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice stacked against the old ones, including Ecco the Dolphin, Strider, and Aladdin. Regulars of the AGDQ Silent Hill, Metroid, Spyro the Dragon and Donkey Kong Country were all present and correct, while two particularly notable challenges saw the “Bubzia” runner playing Super Mario 64 blindfolded and runner “PeekingBoo” battles through a nervous platform game Celestial using a dance mat!
All AGDQ 2021 speedruns are now archived on Twitch and YouTube, and can be quickly accessed via this handy Reddit thread. It seems like a perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday.
I know I’m like a beaten record, but it’s always worth repeating: Video games have a perpetually bad reputation. They did it when I was dropping coins in the arcades in the ’80s, and they do it like a billion dollar industry today. But a far cry from the scare headlines and more toxic aspects of the hobby, the game relies on a dedicated global community of gamers, filled to the brim with good people bursting with passion and generosity.
GDQ events embody this. And at times as chaotic, dangerous and dismal as these, the community has come together to make this important charity event a showcase of what makes our favorite pastime truly special. Congratulations to AGDQ’s faithful – its organizers, hosts and technical team, runners and donors – for their incredible success in the most difficult circumstances. Your energy and tireless efforts never cease to amaze us all.
The Done Quick Summer Games will take place later in 2021. So get practicing.
