Persistence pays off, as does Kristie Ahn. Eleven years of his last appearance at the US Open, the former Stanford All-American, Kristie Ahn, is improbably advanced to the fourth round.
Ranked # 141, the Wild Card native to Flushing Meadows won the third round of her real Slam, with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Jelena Ostapenko.
It's hard not to root for Ahn. After graduating from university, Ahn's parents wanted her to use her Stanford diploma and enter the job market with a stable and well-paid job. But Ahn has chosen to put American companies on hold to follow his sporting ambitions.
"I've heard so many people regret not looking for their dreams," Ahn said during his Saturday post-match interview. She did not want to be one of those people.
Until today, Ahn has spent most of his career navigating in the 200-400 range of the WTA rankings. With her career-changing performance at Flushing Meadows, the New York native will be in the Top 100 for the first time in her career.
Ahn hopes to continue her story on Cinderella on Monday, when she will face Belgium's 25th seed Elise Mertens for a quarter-final spot.
