A retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel pictured wearing zippered handcuffs inside the Capitol during last week’s riot planned to take hostages, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.
By brandishing the constraints, Larry Brock “intends to take hostages. He wants to kidnap, detain, maybe try, maybe execute members of the US government, ”said Assistant US Attorney Jay Weimer.
Weimer, who at Thursday’s hearing argued that Brock should be detained, did not expand on his allegations.
The prosecutor read an article by Brock on social media on the day of the siege, in which he said, “Patriots on Capitol Hill. The patriots take by storm. The armed men must make their way. “
Brock, 53, a father of three, was arrested on Sunday. He has been charged with knowingly entering or remaining in a building or restricted land without legal authorization, as well as violent entry and disorderly conduct on the Capitol grounds.
He previously told The New Yorker magazine that he found the zippered handcuffs on the floor and intended to turn them over to the police.
Brock’s attorney, Brook Antonio II, asked an FBI agent during his testimony on Thursday whether it was possible his client had taken the handcuffs, as he said. The agent recognized the possibility.
“Everything is spoken. It’s just speculation and conjecture, ”Antonio said of the allegations against Brock.
A judge on Thursday released Brock to house arrest. Under the conditions of his release, Brock was ordered to hand over his firearms and his internet access will be limited.
“I have to put you on a very short rope,” Judge Jeffrey Cureton said.
“These are strange times for our country and the concerns raised by the government are not falling on deaf ears.”
