Apple products are notoriously difficult to deconstruct and reassemble, but that hasn’t stopped people from taking the new AirPods Max apart to see how it works.
These folks happen to be the talented team at iFixIt as well as a Chinese YouTube channel, and what they found inside is generally not surprising: two dynamic 40mm drivers designed by Apple; two color-matched magnetic pads; two Apple H1 chips; and eight microphones for active noise cancellation.
But there was a surprise in the helmet that threw them in for a buckle: The headband can be removed quite easily by applying pressure to a small pin-sized hole near the top of the helmet. The headband comes out without a problem, which has led some to suspect that Apple might release interchangeable headbands.
One of the main features of the AirPods Max is their interchangeable earbuds, but this is the first time we’ve heard that the headband itself can be removed – and possibly swapped out – although Apple hasn’t said anything publicly yet. on this subject.
Why swap the headbands in the first place?
The reason this is worth publishing is that the headbands are notoriously fragile, and when they do break, owners usually have no choice but to purchase totally new headphones.
That wouldn’t be the case with AirPods Max if you can swap them out.
Of course, that’s not a feature Apple has officially touted yet, but it’s something the company could do later if it decides to roll out replacements – or, given its penchant for releasing many. Apple Watch straps, customizable variants. If nothing else, however, that means your $ 549 / £ 549 / AU $ 899 investment won’t become an expensive paperweight if someone accidentally sits on it – which is a good consideration.
