AVON, Indiana (WTHR) – Al Unser, Jr. was arrested for OWI early Monday morning in Avon.

The racing legend was taken to Hendricks County Jail at approximately 3:20 am on Operation While Intoxicated and with a $ 300 bond.

Unser just spoke to Hope Academy students earlier this month about why his biggest challenge in life was alcoholism. Hope Academy is a publicly-funded, free-of-charge secondary school for convalescent students who use drugs.

This long-standing challenge has already brought him trouble with the law. In 2002, he was arrested for domestic battery against his girlfriend at the time. She imputed her alcohol consumption to the incident when she reported it to the police. He first denied knowing, but later she hit him first. The woman stopped cooperating with the investigators, but Unser still decided that he needed help.

"Almost all the bad choices I've made in my life have happened under the influence of alcohol," he said in a statement.

After his arrest, Bobby Unser told us that he had talked to his nephew about his problem with alcohol. "The problem has been solved, of course, he knows, but doing nothing is the problem, in other words, knowing is one thing, doing something is something else and he really needs to do something."

He found sobriety for a while, but was arrested in 2007 in Las Vegas for driving under the influence. He was arrested again in 2011 in New Mexico, accused of drag racing drunk.

Al Jr., now 57, has won 34 races, including two 500 in Indianapolis, while he was a pilot, and continues to work in the racing sector.
