10 points in 18 seconds!
The Alabama Class 7A state championship game between Thompson and Auburn on Wednesday night in Tuscaloosa featured one of the most incredible finishes you’ve ever seen.
After returning the ball on low with 1:18 to play nine, 28–19, Thompson looked dead in the water. The turnover gave Auburn the ball over the Thompson 20-yard line, but instead of calling up a few game points and trying to score a dagger from a touchdown or get into position for a basket that would make it a two-touchdown game, Auburn entered a shotgun victory lineup. Thompson had just two timeouts left, so there would be just a few seconds on the clock once he got the ball back. As Auburn (having lost 25 yards to his knees out of the shotgun) prepared to clear the ball and the clock ticked in under 30 seconds, Thompson’s players consoled themselves on the sideline.
But then came the first of many miracles. Thompson’s Korbyn Williams blocked the punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Now, with 18 seconds on the clock and 28-26, Thompson needed to recover the kick in play and score again. The Warriors accomplished the first part of this equation with relative ease. No Auburn player seemed particularly keen on trying to recover the in-play attempt, and it ended up in the hands of a Thompson player on the 46-yard line.
An NFL team could have walked a quick 10-yard run to put their kicker in position to take a peek at a long winner, but that’s high school. Thompson needed help.
This help came in the form of two pass interference penalties. The Flags advanced the ball to the Tigers 18-yard line, giving Thompson kicker Trevor Hardy a chance to throw a 35-yard field goal for the win. He weathered through, giving Thompson a 29-28 victory.
That’s 10 points scored in 18 seconds.
Hardy was aptly named the game’s MVP. He arrived huge there at the end, not only with the winner of the game, but also with the perfect kick and the extra point after the blocked kick touch. .
The victory sealed an unbeaten season for Thompson and gave the Warriors their second straight state title, while Auburn was denied his first championship. It is the eighth title for Thompson coach Mark Freeman, who won six titles before arriving at Birmingham suburban public school in 2015. (He was the highest paid high school coach in state when he was hired, with a salary of $ 121,000.)
“I’m practically speechless,” Freeman told AL.com. “The way it turned out at the end, the way it turned out, is amazing.
