Marshall is expected to hire Alabama assistant head coach / running backs coach Charles Huff as new head coach, pending approval from the university’s board of governors on Monday, sources confirmed to ESPN on Saturday.

Huff, 37, is considered one of college football’s top scouts and has also helped develop running backs Saquon Barkley at Penn State and Najee Harris in Alabama. Huff was never a head coach at the college level.

Huff, a native of Denton, Md., Would become the 12th black head coach of the FBS and the first hired during the offseason. There were 14 in the FBS last season, but three were fired: Kevin Sumlin of Arizona, Lovie Smith of Illinois and Derek Mason of Vanderbilt.

Last season, Huff helped Crimson Tide finish 13-0 and win their sixth national championship under coach Nick Saban. He is the second assistant coach from Alabama to leave for a head coaching position; offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has been hired as Texas’ new coach.

Over the past 14 years, FBS Schools have hired 13 of Saban’s assistants as head coaches. Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones, Saban’s off-court assistant for the past three seasons, has also been hired as Arkansas State’s new coach.

Sarkisian is also hiring Alabama offensive line coach Kyle Flood and special teams / tight ends coach Jeff Banks.

Huff previously worked at Penn State, West Michigan, Vanderbilt and Maryland and one season with the Buffalo Bills.

Huff is replacing longtime Thundering Herd coach Doc Holliday, who was fired earlier this month after 11 seasons with the program. Holliday went 85-54 to Marshall (55-30 in league) with a Conference USA title in 2014 and three division championships. Last season, he led the herd to a 7-3 record and won American Conference Coach of the Year honors for the second time.

Marshall’s defensive coordinator Brad Lambert and Louisville’s offensive coordinator / offensive line coach Dwayne Ledford were also considered for the position.
