Without four SEC games postponed to Saturday as COVID-19 fires ignite throughout the league, Nick Saban said things were relatively calm in his locker room.
Speaking on the SEC coaches’ teleconference on Wednesday, Saban was asked if they saw an increase in positive COVID-19 tests this week.
“We’ve been good,” Saban said with a pause. “I think maybe we had a positive result this week. That’s it.”
Alabama’s game scheduled for Saturday at LSU was postponed Tuesday after the Tigers fell below roster requirements due to positive tests and contact tracing.
Saban expressed anxiety on Monday with the Alabama players returning home last weekend with Tide inactive for the first time this season. The players were allowed to visit their families at home.
“Everyone trusts their family and I trust my family,” Saban said. “But nobody knows where Uncle Tommy has been either. So you always have to be careful. That’s why we try to make the best educational program possible. I mean, the options were to not let the players go n anywhere, which is really kind of a punishment.
“Most of the guys wanted to go see their families. I can’t verify that no one went to a place they weren’t supposed to go, but if they did, we will definitely ask them why they didn’t do what we told them to. asked to do. Because if a player has done that, he doesn’t just put himself in danger, he puts his teammates in danger when he returns. And that’s the one thing our players have been pretty good at so far this year.
Quarterback Mac Jones said he returned home to Jacksonville, Fla. This weekend, but kept his distance from anyone he saw.
“I just got home and spent time with my family,” Jones said. “We dispersed. I haven’t kissed anyone. You eat at a different table, as if you were eating at the children’s table. I sat on the sofa and watched the football. I haven’t really moved much. Just sitting on the couch watching football and trying to relax.
