On Tuesday, Alabama announced the addition of Todd Watson to the coaching staff who will serve as the Head Coach’s Special Assistant.

For the past three seasons, Watson has been on the Tennessee coaching staff as director of football operations for his first two years and as director of football programming last season.

“Todd has a long history as a successful coach in high school in Alabama and more recently in the varsity game on the operations side,” Nick Saban said in a statement. “We are delighted to add his knowledge and experience to our staff. Todd has always been someone we have had the greatest respect for as a person and as a coach.

Prior to his time in Tennessee, Watson was director of football operations and high school relations in Troy from 2015-17. Watson was also one of Alabama’s most successful high school coaches before joining Troy.

He coached at Foley High School for 10 seasons and posted an 80-36 record and coached future Crimson Tide star players like the Atlanta Falcons Julio Jones along with other NFL players like Robert Foster and DJ Fluker.

“It is an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to work for the richest program in college football history,” Watson said in a statement. “My family and I are excited to be back in the great state of Alabama and look forward to being a part of Coach Saban’s staff.

The statement said Watson’s responsibilities range from working in high school relations, to offensive and special team preparation and game failures, while also helping out at camps and clinics.
