LSU’s showdown against Alabama on Saturday is in danger as the Tigers face several players in quarantine following COVID-19 testing.
Several players, including starters, will not be available, coach Ed Orgeron said on Monday. Some have tested positive, while the majority are screened out as a result of contact tracing.
Testing has left the quarterback’s slender program, and the number of players quarantined includes starters in attack, defense and special teams, a source told ESPN.
The school has been in contact with the SEC office as it continues to monitor the situation. Monday morning, the game against Alabama was still ready to go.
Orgeron called this a “fluid situation” heading into the next round of testing on Tuesday, but would not provide the exact number of players who will be missing.
“It’s going to be tough with the guys who came out,” Orgeron said.
According to the SEC protocol, anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 must be quarantined for at least 10 days. Anyone considered to be a high-risk contact should be quarantined for 14 days.
If LSU is unable to play at Alabama, rescheduling might not be possible as the Tigers are already past their opening date and have postponed their game against Florida for December 12.
In addition to concerns about COVID-19, Orgeron said starting quarterback Myles Brennan will not be available to play as he continues to face a lower body injury. Orgeron said the team can move a player from another position to provide depth.
LSU, who won the national championship and went undefeated last season, has had a rough start this season, losing their last game to Auburn on Oct. 31 to drop to 2-3.
