The top seven teams in the college football playoff standings remained unchanged on Tuesday night, as Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State continue to occupy the top four spots.
The Buckeyes remained No.4 despite the cancellation of last Saturday’s game in Illinois following an increase in COVID-19 cases in the program, which included head coach Ryan Day testing positive.
Despite only playing four games, Ohio State remains ahead of Texas A&M, who beat LSU last week at home, and Florida, who beat Kentucky at home.
The Buckeyes resumed team activities on Tuesday and expect to return to play this week at Michigan State. They probably have to play this week and next week to qualify for the Big Ten Championship game.
Alabama and Clemson stayed put after dominating wins, while inactivity Notre Dame learned Tuesday that she had landed a berth in the ACC Championship game in her first season as a member of soccer. Florida No.6, Cincinnati No.7 and Miami No.10 all held their spots this week, while Georgia climbed one spot to No.8 after beating South Carolina.
Northwestern was the only team in the PSC’s initial Top 10 to fall, falling six places to 14th after a loss to Michigan State, its first of the season. Iowa State is the only newcomer to the Top 10, rising to 9th place after Friday’s road victory over Texas, which fell out of the standings. Iowa State is virtually guaranteed a spot in the Big 12 championship game, where it will likely face No.11 Oklahoma.
While the Top 10 has remained largely intact, there have been significant moves elsewhere. Oklahoma State rose eight spots to No.15 after their home win over Texas Tech. Iowa climbed five spots to No. 19 after their home win over Nebraska.
BYU moved up to 13th after not playing last week. The Cougars, an independent from the FBS, will then play Dec. 12 against San Diego State. Cincinnati also remains out this week due to COVID concerns, with the next one taking on Tulsa on December 12, which rose to No.24.
Oregon, the reigning Pac-12 champion, fell eight places to 23rd after a road loss to Oregon State. Washington, who improved to 3-0 after a historic comeback against Utah, makes his CFP debut in 22nd place. The Ducks and Huskies are scheduled to play in Oregon next week. USC, which canceled last week’s game against Colorado due to COVID-19 issues in its schedule, are the 20th-ranked Pac-12 team.
Coastal Carolina has risen two spots to No.18 after improving 9-0 this season. The Chanticleers are hosting ESPN’s College GameDay this week for their game against 9-1 Liberty. Louisiana, which opened the season with a victory at Iowa State, rounds out the CFP rankings at No.25.
The CFP selection committee will publish the rankings on December 8 and 15 before unveiling its final list on December 20.
