It was Alabama against history entering National Signing Day, with the No.1 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Team Rankings, already decided after Crimson’s 325.95 points Tide accumulated during the early signing period. Wednesday’s question was not whether Nick saban and the company would steer clear of the state of Ohio, rather than maintain that position, the highest ranking ever, topping the 2010 Florida Gators score of 324.67.
Spoiler alert: it is. And along the way, he completed his ninth class in 11 cycles.
The only way Crimson Tide couldn’t have finished with a record-breaking score was if the five-star running back got engaged Camar Wheaton did not sign with UA. Any drama that followed was quickly quelled as the country’s No.33 was inked with the Shiny Tide and early Wednesday morning.
If you had brought up the Crimson Tide by ending with the biggest class ever signed on paper last March, you probably would have been laughed at in the hall. After a five-star quarterback Drake maye returned to North Carolina, leaving Bama with only one entry in his class, well outside the Top 50 in the standings, the outlook didn’t look so rosy in the spring. Was there no doubt that Alabama would eventually muster one of the top class in the country, but never the top class? Not so fast.
Then came the summer push.
Alabama canceled a series of engagements from late April to mid-August, including five classified as five-star recruits Jacorey Brooks, offensive tackles JC Latham and Tommy Brockermeyer, board rusher Dallas turnerand defensive tackle Damon payne. Alabama was shooting all cylinders to meet their needs on a wide receiver, offensive and defensive line, and elsewhere. All this without having in-person contact with prospects due to the pandemic.
Pick a job and you could say Alabama has amassed the most talent of anyone this cycle in this group.
Quarterback: Top100 signal caller Jalen milroe
Alabama pivoted to quarterback after losing Drake maye and knocked down once skinny Tide Jalen milroe of the Longhorns, dealing another blow to the former head coach Tom herman and the staff. Despite Steve Sargsyan Taking over at Austin, Milroe had previously signed with Tide and wasn’t looking to make another change anyway.
Running back: five-star ball carrier Camar Wheaton
Alabama signed three backs in 2020, two of which sometimes flashed during the 2020 season in Jase mcclellan and Roydell Williams. The program will also welcome again Brian robinson and former five-star ball carrier Trey sanders, as good as Keilan Robinson who has chosen not to compete in the 2020 season. The Tide will have no shortage of options as a running back, and you can bet Wheaton will only raise the competition to the new manager’s boardroom. running back Robert Gillespie.
Wide receiver: five stars Jacorey Brooks, four stars Jojo earle, Christian leary, and Agiye Room
A cycle that the tide needed to hit elite wide receiver talent and AU staff did not disappoint, signing the most impressive wide receiver class since 2017, which will end up producing top three. players when all is said and done. Need replacement for Jaylen waddle, another first round at the door? Look no further than Leary or Earle, two dynamic and fast-paced athletes. Brooks and Hall give UA that taller inconsistency that will become good friends with whoever wins this spring’s quarterback battle between Bryce young and Paul tyson.
Tight end: three stars Robbie Ouzts
Ouzts doesn’t have the flashy five or four star rating, but he doesn’t care. Flying under the radar, Ouzts gives UA a versatile option for going their separate ways and making plays or creating blocking holes on the line of scrimmage.
Offensive line: the No. 1 and 2 tackles in the country in Tommy Brockermeyer and JC Latham, elite indoor lineman Terrence Ferguson, the first center of the country in James brockermeyerand keep four stars Jaeden roberts outside of Houston.
Alabama dove into the state of Texas to secure two Longhorn inheritance commitments from the Brockermeyer brothers, who had plenty of reasons to move towards the 40 acres. He beat the perceived favorite Georgia for Terrence Ferguson, a Top100 talent, as well as a signed four-star goalkeeper Jaeden roberts after the St. Louis native had doubts about Auburn during the early signing period.
Defensive line: five-star defensive tackle Damon payne, Lineman Top100 Monkell goodwineand in-staters Tim keenan and Anquin Barnes.
That’s not a Nick saban recruiting class without at least a five star along the defensive front. The Tide has replenished their reserves in the trenches and will have plenty of talent for their 2021 rotation following Christian Barmore’s NFL Draft declaration.
Linebacker: Five-Star Edge Rusher Dallas turner, 247 Five-star sports inside ‘backer Lawson County, elite board rusher Keanu Square, four-star domestic backer Kendrick Blackshire, and four-star outside linebacker Ian jackson
A year after signing America’s top linebacker class, you could argue that Tide repeated that feat in 2021. Will anderson has already established itself as a household name across the country, you can expect similar things from Turner and co. with the talent of this group.
Defensive back: Ga’Quincy McKinstry, five-star, 247Sports top junior varsity cornerback in Khyree jackson, Corner Top247 Devonta smithfour star athlete Kadarius Callowayand four-star security Kaine williams
The cornerback was another need for UA in 2021 with Patrick Surtain II out of the league. Alabama has hit a home run at post, recruiting talent that builds depth, given that anyone can play any post in high school. Jackson and McKinstry could arguably push to start the first year.
Perhaps as impressive as the entire talent pool is when you look at the overall work, how UA accomplished the feat and where the program dived is arguably just as remarkable.
The Tide not only used their talent pool in the state, but traveled to Florida and Texas to get top talent from each respective state. In the Lone Star State, Bama signed four of the top 13 players, including the top prospect of Tommy Brockermeyer. In Florida, UA signed five of the top 15 prospects, including the No. 1 ranked rookie in the Sunshine State, JC Latham.
Alabama may not yet be finished on nationwide signing day with five-star security from 247Sports Terrion Arnold set to advertise between Alabama, Georgia and Florida at 3pm CT on ESPN2. Adding Arnold would give UA a score of 327.91. And don’t forget Top247’s best overall prospect, five-star defensive end JT Tuimoloau, who could add to the total. He only announces in the spring.
Thus, despite the somewhat slow start of recruitment for UA 2021, Nick saban and the staff once again proved victorious, setting a mark that is unlikely to be matched at any time in the near future.
