It didn’t take an art history degree to decipher a Monday afternoon tweet from the official Alabama football account.

In a graphic titled “No Coach, But We Still Got It,” the program posted a graphic on the social media platform that included a photo of Mac Jones and the words “Manager Material”.

The background of the photo was blurry except for the clear image of Bo Nix standing on the sidelines.

The tweet and graphic were an apparent reference to a comment Nix made last Tuesday when asked about Jones.

“Yeah, he does a great job managing the game, getting the ball around to the players around him,” Nix said. “Obviously he’s got a great backer, great offensive line, great receivers. It helps a lot. But he does a great job of managing the game, succeeding and knowing what to do with the ball.

Although ostensibly a compliment from Jones, the comment made its way to the Alabama locker room. It seemed to strike a nerve among players who viewed the Alabama quarterback to be more capable than a “game manager” – a lightweight used against quarterbacks who avoid mistakes but lack the knack to win. matches with their arms.

“I think we did [use it as motivation]Wide receiver DeVonta Smith said after Alabama’s 42-13 win. “I sent it to Mac and showed it to him. It was just funny to see that. But I mean, at the end of the day people are going to talk, they are going to do whatever they want. At the end of the day, we’re just going to show up, execute the game plan, and do whatever we need to do.

Jones’ Heisman Trophy odds were cut this week from +250 to +150, according to the Action Network, although he is still behind favorite Kyle Trask at -110.

“We obviously have great players here and that probably makes me look better than I actually am,” Jones said last week when asked about his Heisman candidacy.
