Alabama never loses an opportunity to use a bulletin board quote. In the past, it was strength and conditioning trainer Scott Cochran who lined the walls with comments – real, exaggerated, or made up – but he’s now in Georgia.
DeVonta Smith filled that void this week.
When Auburn’s quarterback Bo Nix made a comment that was seen as a spell from Mac Jones, his star receiver stepped in.
“When I saw it I sent it to Mac and showed it to him,” Smith said after Alabama’s 42-13 victory over Auburn. “It was just funny to see that.”
The quote in question was from Nix’s series of video interviews with local reporters leading up to the Iron Bowl. He understood one of those buzzwords that usually isn’t a compliment.
“He’s doing a great job of managing the game,” Nix said.
Of course, this is associated with being called a “game manager” and it is akin to a pigskin babysitter. Don’t ruin it – it implies – while the real stars win the games.
Jones finished the Iron Bowl pass 18 for 26 with 302 yards and five touchdowns. Nix, meanwhile, was 23 for 38 with 227 yards and two interceptions.
“At the end of the day,” said Smith, who had two touchdowns on a 171-yard receiving day, “people are going to talk and they are going to do whatever they want. And we’re going to show up and execute the game plan and do what we’re going to do.
Jones did not comment on Nix’s quote on a day he threw his 23rd touchdown of the season. He is an early runner for the Heisman Trophy, completing 76.2% of his passes for an average of 341.0 yards per game.
Jones said he didn’t live up to his standards last week against Kentucky and feels like he’s improving on the big stage at the Iron Bowl. Four of his five touchdown passes on Saturday were 24 yards or more. This included a 66-yard open scoring which included a violent false pump that left Smith wide open for an easy touchdown.
