Alabama’s Mac Jones named top QB by Senior Bowl teammates

After a solid week of practice in Mobile, Alabama quarterback Mac Jones was named the top quarterback on the US Senior Bowl team. The award was voted on by high school members who faced Jones in practice during the week at Hancock Whitney Stadium.

The other quarterbacks of the American team, coached by the Carolina Panthers‘ framing staff, are Kellen Mond (Texas A&M) and Jamie Newman (Wake Forest).

Jones rolled his ankle in Thursday training and his availability for Saturday’s game is unclear. But before he suffered the injury, Jones was having a productive week. Several other quarterbacks have used past Senior Bowl practices to cement or increase their draft supply, and according to ESPN insider Field Yates, “there’s no question Mac Jones has done it this week.”

“I was really impressed with who he is,” said Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule.

“I was impressed by his character, his moxie, his booty. I mean, he has it all. You can see why his teammates are following him. He has a great connection with others. He’s been a very productive quarterback and he’s shown a lot of things he can do this week. He’s really smart. It is precise. He can move his feet and slip into the pocket. For me, by getting to know him, I can see why everyone is thrilled with him and why he has had the success that he has had.

Whether Jones will play in Saturday’s game remains to be seen, but offensive lineman Landon Dickerson (knee), wide receiver DeVonta Smith (finger) and running back Najee Harris (ankle) have already been ruled out. Former Alabama players who should dress include offensive linemen Deonte Brown and Alex Leatherwood and long snapper Thomas Fletcher.

Reese’s 2021 Senior Bowl will begin at 1 p.m. PT and will air on the NFL Network.
