Disney is ready to continue a record year with the release of this weekend's Aladdin, the live-action reinventing one of their most beloved animated movies. The remake is led by Guy Ritchie, from a script written by Ritchie and John August based on a script of Ron Clements, John Musker, and Ted Elliot and Terry Rosio. With Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, and Billy Magnussen, Aladdin is now in theaters.
I must speak with the composer Alan Menken, who wrote the music of the original, recounts his experience in the film almost three decades later.
Alan Menken:
- How would his career be different without Disney.
- What is his favorite Disney song.
- What Disney number does it have wish he wrote.
- Finally answer the question: Is "Never a friend like me" specific to Aladdin, or will everyone who found the lamp have the same song and dance? (I would like to believe that genius changes it every two or three centuries).
Here is the official synopsis for Aladdin:
"Aladdin" is a thrilling and vibrant adaptation of Disney's classic animated screenplay. It tells the fascinating story of charming street rat Aladdin, the brave Princess Jasmine and the genius that could be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who brings his singular flair for a quick, visceral action in the fictional port city of Agrabah, "Aladdin" is written by John August and Ritchie after "Aladdin" by Disney. The film stars Will Smith, the genius; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia; Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim.
