Alan B. Krueger, an economist from Princeton University who served in the Clinton and Obama administrations, died this weekend. He was 58 years old.

Princeton announced his death Monday, without specifying a cause.

Krueger was deputy secretary of the Treasury from 2009 to 2010, as President Barack Obama's administration tried to pull the US out of its worst recession since the Great Depression. Later, he was chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers during the first days of economic recovery, from 2011 to 2013.

From 1994 to 1995, he was the Chief Economist of the Department of Labor headed by President Bill Clinton.

Mr. Krueger, a labor economist by training, was known for his preliminary work, concluding that the minimum wage did not reduce the employment of low-wage workers. More recently, he has studied the role of the opioid epidemic in reducing employment in men. He also studied less serious topics, including the rising price of concert tickets.

Mr. Krueger has also worked on the Economic Scene column and the New York Times Economix blog.

A complete obituary will be available soon.
