BETHEL, Alaska (AP) – Participants in a religious meeting in Alaska may have been exposed to TB.

KYUK-AM reported Friday that a person who had been diagnosed with an active case of the disease had participated in the awakening of the New Fire Bethel Ministry from April 12 to 14.

Officials from Alaska Public Health and the Yukon – Kuskokwim Health Society said the person had attended the three – day event in western Alaska. .

The bacterium of tuberculosis, which usually attacks the lungs, can easily spread and the symptoms are not obvious, often leaving people unaware of wearing it.

One official said that there were up to a hundred people at the event each day who could have been exposed.

One official said that Alaska had the country's highest TB rate, but that the state strain was not resistant to drugs and that it could be treated and cured.
