Former NFL defensive tackle and former Tennessee Volunteers Albert Haynesworth accused the school of systemic racism and urged people to boycott the university after the football program hired Josh Heupel to be its coach -master without questioning former quarterback and current receivers coach Tee Martin.
Haynesworth wrote on Facebook:
“BOYCOTT TENNESSEE FOR SYSTEMATIC RACISM !!!!!
“Obviously the Tennessee Flights take Tee Martin for granted! Why is that okay with him, damn he even cut his pay to help college when he didn’t have to? Is it because that he’s black? UT won’t even interview I bring race, as UT has outgrown good, skilled black coaches like Kippy Brown and others in these latest coaching searches. Majority of your players are Afro – Americans why not put an African American coach to lead them especially the one who won a Tennessee championship? You are giving everyone but a qualified black man a chance! That said, I will not be in any games or wont support until I see the change in the college that I love so much! Hope my former black student in Tennessee will follow me boycotting college showing how serious we are not to feel equality for our fellow black coaches qualified !!!
Former Tennessee wide receiver Peerless Price also spoke out against Martin not being interviewed:

I just hung up on my Quarterback Martin tee and told my guy his pain is an understatement! My brother, if my vision has ever been clouded, I have a clear view of all that you have sacrificed for our University. Damn the pain in my brother’s voice that I’ve never heard before!
Duke’s current women’s basketball head coach Kara Lawson, a former Tennessee alumnus, said in June that the school’s athletic department needs to improve its lack of diversity.

By Will Backus from Knoxville News Sentinel, Tennessee has had exactly three black head coaches in its history: the men’s basketball head coach Wade Houston from 1989 to 1994, head coach of men’s basketball Cuonzo Martin from 2011 to 2014 and JJ Clark of athletics from 2001 to 2014.
The school also does not have black senior staff in its sports department.
The school’s new athletic director, Danny White, came over from UCF and brought Heupel with him. Heupel went 28-8 in three seasons at the helm of the Knights.
