Alex Cora, the manager of the Boston Red Sox, will not participate in the ceremony to be held Thursday at the White House to pay tribute to the champions of the 2018 world series.

Cora cited the Trump administration's response to Hurricane Maria in her home country, Puerto Rico, as the reason for her decision.

"The government has done some great things in the country but we still have a long way to go," he said Sunday after a 9-2 win over the Chicago White Sox. "It's our reality, it's quite difficult to go celebrate when we're here, I prefer not to go and be consistent with everything."

Cora recently said that he could attend the ceremony and say something, but he changed his mind after talking with his family and friends.

"We talked about it and decided (not to go) that it was the best way to do it," he said.

Cora said that he had informed the Red Sox of his decision a few days ago. Boston plays in Baltimore from Monday to Wednesday and has a day off Thursday.

The short stop Xander Bogaerts also said Sunday that he would not go to the White House.
