Dozens of President Trump’s supporters gathered outside the Georgia Capitol building on Wednesday ahead of a late-night deadline for recounting ballots that should show him the loss of the state to Joe Biden.

Protesters waved US and Trump campaign flags and signs with messages including “STOP THE STEAL”, video clips show posted by local TV channels on Twitter.

Many of those visible in the crowd gathered on the sidewalk were not wearing face masks to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus, and it was not clear if there were any.

Unverified clips also reportedly showed controversial talk show host Alex Jones among a small group of unmasked protesters entering the Capitol in Atlanta.

Jones urged his fans on Monday to “go to Georgia’s capital now and circle the governor’s mansion now,” according to liberal website Media Matters.

Biden holds an unofficial lead of around 14,000 votes in Peach State, where the Associated Press said the recount effort, which began Friday morning, has led to the discovery of more than 500 ballots not counted in two counties.

The deadline to complete the recount is 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensberger said he didn’t expect efforts to change Biden’s apparent victory.

Raffensperger also told the Washington Post on Monday that he had come under pressure from fellow Republicans – including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) – to try to tip the election in Trump’s favor by disqualifying them. postal ballots.

Graham called the allegation “ridiculous” and said he was simply asking, “How do you protect the integrity of postal voting and how does signature verification work?”
