Alex Murdaugh’s lawyer tried to explain his client’s bizarre plot to hire a hitman to kill him in order to secure a $ 10 million insurance payment. In a shocking turn of an already convoluted case, a South Carolina man was accused on Tuesday of shooting Murdaugh – a highly regarded local lawyer – in an assisted suicide plot three months after the assassination of the wife and son of Murdaugh. Murdaugh’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, appeared on the Today show to explain the events. “The murder of his son and his wife 90 days ago took a heavy toll on him … He got away with using opioids,” the lawyer said, explaining that Murdaugh was in pain channeled money from a law firm to buy the drugs. “He was in a massive depression, realized that things were going very badly, and he decided to end his life.” Believing his life insurance policy provided for a suicide exclusion, Murdaugh hired a hitman to kill him, Harpootlian claimed. The lawyer added that Murdaugh intended the millions to go to his only surviving son, Buster.
