Barely 11 minutes into the first period, Svechnikov, 19, weighing 195 pounds, exchanged words with Ovechkin. Svechnikov nodded, seeming to agree to a fight, then it was like that.
Ovechkin, 33, weighing 235 pounds, won three consecutive rights on Svechnikov's face. It was finished quickly. Canes' teammates immediately reported a coach.
The broadcast of Canes captured an even more brutal fighting angle.

Svechnikov was visibly ill. He was escorted to the locker room.
The fight was only the fourth of his career.
Chip Alexander said that Svechnikov would not return to the game during the first intermission.
