Interesting news from the Penguins’ latest opponent, as the NHL fines the Washington Capitals $ 100,000 and added four players to the list of “COVID protocol absences.”
The four players added to the list are all very well known:
Travel protocol: each member of the club travel group will be required to stay in a single occupancy room; no one should allow guests or other staff into their rooms (except maintenance / engineering staff as needed … while people are not present)

The statement builds on existing reports. Mainly, it appears that Ovechkin, Orlov, Kuznetsov and Samsonov were all outside of the team-approved areas at some point (probably without a mask). At this point, however, we don’t know if any Caps players have tested positive for COVID, or how long they could be away.
Wednesday night, much remains unknown. What exactly did these players do, just at certain times gather in a hotel room in Pittsburgh – where they stayed from Saturday night until before Tuesday’s game? Sounds harmless enough considering they’re already in a bubble together on team buses, planes, locker rooms, stuck together on benches while breathing heavily and all that good stuff nearby for long stretches of time.
But is this situation deeper? Were there other non-players present who constituted this heavy fine? How did the league even learn this? Did any (or all) of these players test positive to indicate they had broken procedures? All answers to these questions are currently unknown or unreported at this time.
The last question is probably the most important, as these players were in very close contact with the Penguins on Sunday and also just last night. It would be a messy situation if it turned out that multiple players could have transmitted the virus to another team, should it happen. Which, again, at this point, we’re not sure if that’s a possibility. Or is not a possibility.
An important reminder is that just being in “NHL protocol” doesn’t necessarily mean a player has tested positive for the virus.
Friendly reminder that players on the NHL’s COVID protocol roster could be absent for a number of reasons: an unconfirmed positive COVID-19 test, a confirmed case of COVID-19, isolation while showing symptoms , contact tracing or quarantine for travel reasons.

Through testing, as of Wednesday, we know that the Penguins currently have no players in the NHL’s COVID protocol, and it will certainly be of great attention in the coming days to hope that no more players. from Pittsburgh (or Washington for that matter) will not be added to the list.
It’s also unclear how long the Capital players will be away or how long until they agree to NHL protocol. The Capitals are scheduled to play next Friday in Washington. The Penguins will also play Friday in Pittsburgh against the New York Rangers. The NHL has already had to postpone several games in the first week of the season.
