Alex Smith reportedly “no animosity” for Washington football team

In recent comments to GQWashington quarterback Alex Smith provided candid and candid comments regarding his belief the team “didn’t want me out there” as he tried to come back with a badly broken leg. Smith now seems to regret the impact of his comments.

“Seems to be” becomes the key phrase because Smith has not publicly explained the situation. Instead, someone leaked more information about the situation to JP Finlay from 106.7 The Fan in DC.

“I spoke to a source close to Alex yesterday,” Finlay said. “One thing they want to clarify is that Alex was talking to a journalist who didn’t know anything about football, and if you go back, the first story that came out had to be edited because Alex said “IR” and the reporter thought that meant “arms up”. He’s not a guy who knows football. And it is not a chance. I don’t know the lifestyle; I couldn’t go write a fashion piece. I could write about football because it is my voice. . . . The message from the source I spoke to near Alex is that, listen, there’s no animosity towards the organization. None of these comments were intended to drive anyone crazy. He was simply telling the story of what had happened.

There is no denial or dispute regarding the words Smith used to tell Clay Skipper about GQ. What if Skipper thought he heard “arm up” instead of “IR”? Does this make the quotes he attributed to Smith incorrect?

He said what he said, and no one is saying he didn’t say it. Smith’s concern doesn’t seem to be what he said or what was written, but his reaction.

To his credit, Smith isn’t trying to say he didn’t say what he said. He said it. He probably thought so. He just didn’t want this to be interpreted as criticism of the team.

But how could he not? He chose strong words that made it clear the team did not want Smith to return to the field. Unless and until he uses different words or says the words he used were not the words that were posted, neither Smith nor any source close to him should be complaining about the way whose words those who see and hear react to it.
