Alex Trebek’s hometown of Greater Sudbury, Ontario hopes to commemorate the late “Jeopardy!” star.
Trebek was confirmed on Sunday to have passed away at age 80 after a lengthy battle with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. After hosting the iconic game show since 1984, he has become something of a hometown hero in Canada. From now on, the mayor of the city would take measures to pay homage to him in a public space.
According to TMZ, Mayor Brian Bigger has responded to requests on social media to erect a type of public artwork honoring Trebek for bringing attention to his hometown. While wall painting or statue ideas have been thrown around, Bigger suggests connecting the famous TV personality to a new public library that will be built over the next few years.
Representatives for the City of Greater Sudbury did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

However, Bigger told TMZ that nothing has been decided as of yet, but that he plans to raise the ideas at the next city council meeting to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible. He added that whatever the city decides to do, it would only move forward with the blessing of Trebek’s family, whom he has yet to contact to give them time to cry.

While the city is waiting to move forward with any type of public art project, it still gave citizens a chance to praise the late “Jeopardy!” host in its own way. Bigger took to Twitter over the weekend to announce that the city had created a virtual condolence book that citizens were free to use to leave a message for Trebek and his family.
“On behalf of @GreaterSudbury I would like to express our condolences to the Trebek family,” the mayor wrote in a Twitter thread.

“Alex Trebek enjoyed international fame while retaining the Nordic charm and spirit that followed him wherever he went. Millions of people have welcomed him into their homes every night for decades, but when you met him, you really felt like he was an old friend of the family, ”Bigger continued. “Alex was a great ambassador for Greater Sudbury and was truly responsible for putting our city on the map so the world would know it. He was loved, respected and will be missed. However, his legacy and memory will long be part of Greater Sudbury’s proud history.
