Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo had an impressive ALDS Game 2.

In the first set, he scored in the middle to score Kiké Hernández and give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

This lead was quickly lost later in the first heat, but Verdugo played a part in the rally by putting the Red Sox back in the lead. Right after Xander Bogaerts hit a solo homerun in the third inning, Verdugo hit a solo right shot to reduce the Rays’ lead to 5-4.

The Red Sox regained the lead in the fifth when JD Martinez hit a three-run homerun to bring the score to 8-5 for the Red Sox. With the Red Sox carrying that same lead in the bottom of the sixth, it was time for Verdugo to make some defensive play to help maintain the lead.

Rays hitter Nelson Cruz hit a fly ball deep in the left, which seemed to be heading towards the foul post from the start. The ball began to drift into foul territory and out of play. But Verdugo ran towards the wall, placing his upper body over the fence and extending his right arm to grab.

Verdugo’s capture may have saved a race for the Red Sox. Later in the inning, Ji-Man Choi hit a solo homerun to reduce the Red Sox’s lead to 8-6. It was the only point allowed by Tanner Houck in five relief innings.

In what always seems to happen in baseball, Verdugo was the expected first hitter in the next half-inning after putting in an impressive defensive play. He hit a single down the infield, barely beating shortstop Wander Franco’s pitch to reach base. Christian Vázquez hit Verdugo later in the inning to give the Red Sox a 9-6 lead.
