“I didn’t think I was just going to be killed,” Ocasio-Cortez told CNN’s Dana Bash on “Being … AOC,” the first episode of CNN’s new series “Being …” aired Monday. evening. at 9 p.m. ET. “I thought other things were going to happen to me too.”
When asked if this belief was driven in part by her experience as a sexual assault survivor, Ocasio-Cortez said past trauma weighed on her mind as she hid.
“Survivors have a very strong skill set. And the skills required as a survivor, the tools you build for resilience, they come right back,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview in his district in June. “And to me, I felt like those skills were coming back right away so I could survive.”
She also traced the sentiment to what she described as the “misogyny and racism” that “animated” the “attack on Capitol Hill”.
“White supremacy and patriarchy are very much linked in many ways,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “There is a lot of sexualization of this violence.”
Ocasio-Cortez first shared in February that she had been sexually assaulted years earlier. His revelation in an Instagram Live video came less than a month after supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol, breached security and began to force their way through its halls in search of legislators.
The MP, who has just started her second term, described in the video being locked in her office bathroom, listening to a knock on doors and finally hearing a voice asking, “Where is she?” Ocasio-Cortez did not know at the time that it was a Capitol Police officer – because, she said, the officer did not identify himself.
“There’s no way a person in this situation even thought it was law enforcement,” she told CNN. “That’s not how we’re sort of trained to think.”
The decision, weeks later, to tell her story of sexual assault in her early twenties, she said, had not been “conscious”.
“You don’t say, ‘Now is the time. I’ll do it now.’ It feels like something is happening under the circumstances that are almost pushing you and almost forcing you to come forward, ”Ocasio-Cortez said. “Because I think a lot of survivors would rather never talk about what happened again.”
