Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: the polls of the AOC are bad

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), social media star and self-identified democratic socialist, is quite unpopular throughout the country.

A Quinnipiac poll released Thursday morning revealed that 23% of Americans had a favorable opinion of the congressman, while 36% had an unfavorable opinion – an overall approval rate of -13. Thirty-eight percent did not hear enough about her to get an informed opinion.

This new survey is not a one-off finding. Three previous surveys – one in January from Morning Consult, one in February from Fox and a third in mid-March from Gallup – all revealed that more Americans had negative views on the WCA than Positive points of view. This is likely to surprise many Democrats, who see all her viral clips and impressive performances at congressional hearings and assume she is a rising star.

So what's going on? Ocasio-Cortez herself has a favorite explanation – it has been vilified in Fox News and other conservative media, and has lowered its national popularity rating. If this theory is correct, then you expect that its negative proposition is almost entirely led by Republicans hating it and by all the others who do not know it so much.

And that seems to be exactly what is happening.

How conservative media are reducing the number of AOC polls

If you look at the details of the latest survey, that of Quinnipiac, you will see that Ocasio-Cortez is extremely well received by the Democrats: 47% appreciate it favorably and 7% is favorably. On the other hand, it is perceived extremely unfavorably by the Republicans: 2% hardly consider it favorably, while 74% consider it unfavorably.

The most striking partisan difference is the number of people she knows in each party.

A large number of Democrats – 44% – have not heard enough about her to form an opinion. A much lower percentage of Republicans – 23% – can say as much. The AOC is simply better known to Republicans than Democrats, which pushes it upward.

This could be the case for several reasons. His overall political message is rather polarizing and it is not surprising that it distorts the Republicans particularly. But disproportionate attention to it in the conservative media seems to be an important part of history.

The Washington Post's Phillip Bump analyzed the Fox News segments between January 1 and February 15 this year, comparing the number of segments mentioning the AOC to those involving at least one of the Democratic 2020 presidential candidates. It turned out that his Fox media coverage was superior to that of any other candidate, Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is also a right-wing boogeyman. Ocasio-Cortez got much more coverage from Fox News than fellow Socialist Democrat Bernie Sanders.

It is amazing that a single Democratic MP can attract so much attention and become so famous at the beginning of his first term. This shows how it is a phenomenon in the Democratic Left – and how much the Right seems to hate and fear it.

In an interview with David Remnick of the New Yorker, AOC has described any media attention as exhausting and dangerous.

"I have a full-time job in Congress, then I have the clarity of my head as the biggest villain in the United States or as a new hope. And it's pretty tiring, "she said. "This voracious hysteria – it really reaches an uncontrollable level."
